Niklas Luhmann was a famous German thinker. He was a sociologist. This means he studied how people live in groups. He was born in 1927 in a place called Lüneburg. During World War II, he served in the military. Later, he studied law at a university.

Luhmann had big ideas about how the world works. He created a way to look at society called systems theory. He believed society is made of communication. To him, communication is how people share meaning. He said society is like a giant web of talks.

He saw that modern society has many parts. These parts have their own jobs. Some parts handle law. Others handle science, art, or money. He called these parts functional subsystems. He thought these parts work on their own. They do not all follow one central leader.

Luhmann wrote many books. He wrote more than 70 books. He also wrote nearly 400 short papers. His writing is very deep. Some people say it is hard to read. Many scholars in Europe and Japan study his work today.
