Niklas Luhmann was a very important German sociologist. A sociologist is someone who studies how people live together in groups.

He wanted to find a way to explain everything that happens in society. He created something called systems theory to do this. He believed that society is not just a collection of people. Instead, he thought society is made of communication. This means that the way people share meaning is what builds the world.

His theory works by looking at how systems stay alive. He used a special word called autopoiesis. This word means "self-creation."

He thought social systems work like living things that make themselves. A system stays a system by following its own rules. It picks certain information from the huge, messy world around it. This helps the system stay organized and clear. This process is called the reduction of complexity. It helps a system focus on its own special job.

Luhmann had a very busy life. He was born in Lüneburg, Germany, in 1927.

During World War II, he served in the military for two years. After the war, he studied law at the University of Freiburg. He later went to Harvard University to study with Talcott Parsons. Parsons was a very famous thinker about social systems. Luhmann eventually moved away from Parsons' ideas to build his own. He became a professor at the University of Bielefeld in 1968.

Luhmann was a very hard worker who wrote many things. He published more than 70 books during his life. He also wrote nearly 400 scholarly articles.

One of his most famous books is called "Theory of Society." It was published in two volumes in 2012 and 2013. He also wrote about many different topics. These included law, art, religion, science, and even love. His writing can be very difficult and complex to read. Even experts sometimes find his words hard to understand.

Today, many people study Luhmann's big ideas. His work is very popular in Germany and Scandinavia. It is also studied in places like Japan, Italy, and Russia.

He helped us see that modern society is like a global web. This web has many different parts that work on their own. For example, the law and the economy are separate parts. They do not all follow one central leader. Instead, they each have their own way of working. This helps us understand our complicated modern world.
