Immanuel Wallerstein was a famous teacher and writer. He was born in New York in 1930. His family moved to New York from far away. They were Polish Jews. He went to school at Columbia University. He earned his highest degree there in 1959.

Wallerstein spent much of his life studying how the world works. At first, he studied Africa. He even became the leader of a group for African studies. Later, he looked at the whole world. He wanted to see how money and trade join different lands together. This is called the world-systems approach.

He had a big idea about how countries act. He said the world is like a system. Some areas are the "core." These areas have a lot of power. Other areas are the "periphery." These areas are less powerful. He wrote many books about these ideas. One famous book is called The Modern World-System.

He taught at many big schools. He worked at McGill University in Canada. He also worked at Yale University. He died in 2019 at the age of 88. His work still helps us study our changing world.
