Georges Duby was a famous historian from France. He lived from 1919 to 1996. He spent his life studying the Middle Ages. This was a time of knights and kings.

Duby did not just study big wars. He wanted to know how regular people lived. He looked at how they worked and ate. He studied how they used money. He even studied how they thought about the world. This was a new way to do history.

One of his most important books was about a place called Mâconnais. He used old papers from a monastery to learn about it. He found that society changed around the year 1000. He saw how power moved from kings to knights. He thought some knights went on Crusades to find fame. Other experts later disagreed with him.

Duby also wrote about how people saw their world. He wrote about great cathedrals and the lives of knights. He wanted history to be fun. He appeared on TV and radio to talk about the past. He believed history should be exciting for everyone to read.
