Jacques Le Goff was a famous historian from France.

He lived from 1924 to 2014. He spent his life studying the Middle Ages. This was the time between the ancient world and our modern world. Most people back then studied wars and kings. Le Goff wanted to see things differently. He belonged to a group called the Annales School. This group looked at how life changed over a long time. He also led a big school in Paris called EHESS.

Le Goff wrote many books. One book was about a place called purgatory. He said people began to see it as a real place in the 12th century. He also wrote about the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. He wrote about King Louis IX of France, too. He won many big prizes for his work. One was the Heineken Prize in 2004. He was a very important teacher of history.

His books helped us understand how people lived long ago.
