He was born in 1802 in a place called Nedstrand. His father was a pastor named Søren Georg Abel. Niels learned many things from his father at home. He grew up in a house called a rectory. His family moved to Gjerstad after his grandfather died in 1804.

Even as a young student, Niels showed a special talent for math. A teacher named Bernt Michael Holmboe noticed this gift. The teacher gave him private lessons after school. He even helped Niels get money to study at a university. This support changed the course of Niels's life.

At the university, Niels became a master of math.

He spent a lot of time reading books in the library. One big math puzzle had been unsolved for 250 years. This puzzle involved something called a quintic equation. Many famous mathematicians tried to solve it without success. In 1823, Niels made a huge discovery about this problem. He proved that these equations could not be solved with a certain method. This discovery is now known as the Abel–Ruffini theorem. It showed the world that some math problems have limits.

Niels did much more than just solve one big puzzle.

He was an innovator in the study of elliptic functions. He also discovered a new class of math called Abelian functions. Much of his important work happened in just six or seven years. He sent many of his papers to a journal in Berlin. This journal was called Crelle's Journal. Niels helped make the journal a great success by sending it many articles. His mind was very sharp and fast. A mathematician named Charles Hermite said Niels left enough work to keep people busy for 500 years.

Niels traveled to many different cities during his short life.

Life was often very hard for Niels because he was poor. He did not always have enough money for his travels. He even had to take a loan from a bank. He tried to work as a tutor to earn money. Despite these hard times, he never stopped his research.

Niels's life ended much too soon.

He died in 1829 when he was only 26 years old. He died from a sickness called tuberculosis. Even though he lived a short life, his ideas were huge. He showed us how to look at math in new ways. Today, people still study the things he discovered. His name is remembered in math because of his amazing work. He proved that even a young person can change how we see the world.
