Évariste Galois was a brilliant French mathematician and a passionate political activist.

He lived during a time of great change in France. He was born on 25 October 1811 to Nicolas-Gabriel Galois and Adélaïde-Marie. His mother taught him many things for the first twelve years of his life. By age 14, he was studying math with great focus. He once read a geometry book as if it were a novel. He was so smart that his teachers saw his brilliance early on.

Galois wanted to solve puzzles involving polynomial equations. These are math problems that have been studied for a very long time. He found a way to know if these equations could be solved using radicals. This discovery solved a problem that had been open for 350 years. His work helped create two new branches of math called Galois theory and group theory. These are parts of abstract algebra.

Even though he was young, his ideas were very deep and important.

His path to success was not easy or smooth. In 1828, he tried to enter the École Polytechnique. This was the most famous math school in France at the time. He failed the test because he did not prepare in the usual way. He then went to the École Normale instead. In 1829, he earned his degree through the Baccalaureate exams. His math teacher said he was very intelligent and loved to research.

Galois also cared deeply about politics in France. He was a strong supporter of the Republic. This led him to join the National Guard. He was involved in the July Revolution of 1830. Because of his political actions, he was arrested several times. He spent some time in the Sainte-Pélagie prison. He even continued to work on his math while he was in jail.

Some experts found his math very hard to follow. A mathematician named Siméon Denis Poisson called his work incomprehensible.

This did not stop Galois from trying to fix his papers. He worked hard to polish his ideas until his final days. Sadly, Galois died very young after a duel in May 1832. He was only 20 years old. Today, we remember him for his amazing mathematical mind.
