Évariste Galois was a brilliant French mathematician.

Augustin Cauchy

He loved solving deep puzzles. At age 14, he began studying math seriously. He read math books like they were novels. By age 15, he was reading papers for experts. He worked on how to solve equations. This work solved a problem that was 350 years old. His ideas helped start two big branches of math. These are called Galois theory and group theory.

Galois was also a political activist. He fought for a republic in France. This was a very loud and busy time. His actions led to many arrests. He even spent time in jail. He kept writing his math ideas while in prison.

One expert named Siméon Denis Poisson said his work was hard to understand.

Galois did not give up. He kept polishing his work. Sadly, Galois died very young. He died from wounds after a duel in 1832. He was only 20 years old. His math changed how we see the world.
