News values

Have you ever wondered why some stories make the front page? Journalists use special rules called news values to help them decide. These values are criteria that influence which events get reported. They also help decide how those stories are presented to you.

These rules help explain what makes an event truly newsworthy. Without these guidelines, newsrooms would struggle to choose among so many things happening at once.

News selection works like a chain of communication. First, there is the selection step. This is when journalists look for events that fit many news factors. The more factors an event has, the more likely it is to be picked. Next comes the distortion step. This means the news might emphasize certain parts of a story to make it stand out. Finally, there is replication. This happens when the selection and distortion steps repeat at every stage from the event to the reader.

Researchers first studied these patterns many years ago. In 1965, Johan Galtung and Mari Holmboe Ruge released a famous study. They looked at Norwegian newspapers during the Congo and Cuban crisis of 1960. They also studied the Cyprus crisis from March to April 1964. They found that certain factors were used across many different news outlets. Later, in 2001, Tony Harcup and Deirdre O'Neill updated this work. They studied the British press to see how news values had changed over forty years.

There are many different types of news values. Some focus on the event itself. For example, negativity means bad news is often more newsworthy than good news. Conflict involves people or forces in opposition. Eliteness means stories about famous or powerful people get more attention. Proximity means the event is close to the reader in place or culture. Other values include timeliness, which means the event is current. Unexpectedness means the event is rare or out of the ordinary.

Today, news is changing because of digital technology. Modern journalists must also think about audience expectations. They look for shareability, which is how easy a story is to share online. They also value immediacy, or how quickly a story happens. Some stories are chosen because they are likely to get many clicks. This new way of working changes the old roles of news producers and audiences. Even with these changes, traditional values like conflict and prominence still remain very important.
