The human brain is the most important part of your nervous system. It works with your spinal cord to manage your whole body.

The brain processes information from your senses and sends instructions to your muscles. It is a very soft organ with a gel-like texture. Some people say it feels like soft tofu.

Your hard skull acts like a helmet to keep it safe. The brain also floats in a special fluid called cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid helps protect the brain from moving too much.

The brain has three main parts: the cerebrum, the brainstem, and the cerebellum. The cerebrum is the largest section and sits on top.

It is divided into two halves called hemispheres. These two sides are connected by a large bridge of nerves called the corpus callosum. Each hemisphere has four main lobes: the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes. The frontal lobe helps with planning and self-control. The occipital lobe is dedicated to your vision. The temporal lobe helps with hearing, speech, and memory. The parietal lobe helps you feel things.

Inside the brain, tiny cells called neurons do all the work. There are more than 86 billion neurons in a human brain.

These neurons connect to form long paths and networks. They send signals to each other using a process called neurotransmission. This happens when neurons release special chemicals called neurotransmitters. There are also billions of other cells called glial cells that support the neurons. This massive network of cells allows you to think, move, and feel.

Scientists study the brain in different ways. People who study the parts of the brain use a field called neuroanatomy. People who study how the brain works use neuroscience.

Doctors use special tools like EEG recordings to see brain activity. They also use medical imaging to look inside the living brain. In the past, people studied animals under microscopes to learn more. Today, research is still growing every single day.

Learning about the brain helps us understand how we become ourselves. For a long time, philosophers have wondered how our minds work with our bodies. In the 1800s, a mistaken idea called phrenology tried to find personality in the shape of the head.

Even science fiction movies imagine things like brain transplants. The brain is what lets you experience the world around you. It is the center of everything you do.
