The hippocampus is a vital part of the brain found in humans and many other vertebrates.

It is part of a group of structures called the hippocampal formation. This group includes the dentate gyrus and the subiculum. The hippocampus is located within the limbic system. This system helps manage many important brain tasks. One major job is moving information from short-term memory to long-term memory. It also handles spatial memory, which helps you navigate through the world.

This part of the brain works through a series of connected steps. Information first enters through the entorhinal cortex. This area acts like an interface for the brain. From there, the signal often follows a path called the trisynaptic circuit. It travels through the dentate gyrus first. Next, the signal moves to a section called CA3. Finally, it reaches the CA1 area.

From CA1, the information can head back to the entorhinal cortex. This loop helps the brain process and store what it learns.

People have studied this structure for a very long time. In 1587, an anatomist named Julius Caesar Aranzi described it. He thought it looked like a silkworm or a seahorse. The name comes from the Greek words for horse and sea monster.

Later, in 1729, Johann Georg Duvernoy made the first illustrations. In 1786, Félix Vicq-d'Azyr gave it an official name. For a while, people even called it the "horn of Amun." It took until the middle of the 20th century to link it to memory.

Scientists use the hippocampus to learn how brain cells work.

They study a process called long-term potentiation, or LTP. This is a way that brain connections grow stronger to store memories. Researchers also study rodents to see how the brain maps space. In rats, special cells called place cells fire in specific spots. These cells help the animal know exactly where it is in its environment.

This helps us understand how all creatures navigate.

Understanding the hippocampus helps us learn about brain health. If this area is damaged, it can cause serious problems. Diseases like Alzheimer's often affect the hippocampus first. This can lead to losing short-term memories or getting lost.

Other issues like oxygen starvation or epilepsy can also cause damage. Some people might experience anterograde amnesia from this damage. This means they cannot form any new memories at all. It shows just how much we rely on this small part of our brain.
