Your brain has a very important part called the hippocampus.

This part helps you remember things. It moves new facts from short-term memory to long-term memory. It also helps you find your way around. This is called spatial memory.

The hippocampus is shaped like a curved, rolled-up tube. Some people think it looks like a seahorse. This is why it has that name.

It is found in many animals. In rats and mice, certain cells act as place cells. These cells fire when the animal is in a specific spot. This helps the animal know where it is.

Sometimes, the hippocampus can be damaged. This might happen from diseases like Alzheimer's. It can also happen if the brain does not get enough oxygen. Damage can make it hard to make new memories. This is called anterograde amnesia. This means a person cannot hold onto new things they learn.
