They are part of a larger system in your brain. These parts help you feel emotions. They also help you make choices and remember things.

The amygdala is made of many small parts called nuclei. Each nucleus has its own job. Some parts connect to your sense of smell. Other parts connect to the rest of your brain. This helps you react to the world around you.

The two sides of the amygdala work together. But they also have different jobs. The right side helps you feel fear. It helps you remember scary things so you can stay safe. It also helps you remember facts and life events. The left side helps with happy feelings. It is also linked to the brain's reward system.

These parts grow a lot when you are young. In girls, these parts reach full growth sooner than in boys. The left side also finishes growing before the right side. This early growth helps babies spot danger.

This helps them stay safe from the start.
