Your brain has many parts. One part is the temporal lobe. It is found on both sides of the brain. The name comes from your temples.

This part helps you hear. It has the primary auditory cortex. This part gets signals from your ears. It helps turn sounds into words.

The temporal lobe also helps you see. It helps you recognize objects and faces. Some parts help you see complex scenes.

Memory is a big job for this part. It helps make long-term memories. This includes facts and events. The hippocampus is a key part here. It helps form new memories.

This part also helps with language. Wernicke's area helps you understand speech. It works for spoken or signed words. This is true for children learning to talk too.

Sometimes, damage to this area causes problems. A person might have trouble recognizing faces. This is called prosopagnosia. They might also have trouble with memory. This can make it hard to learn new things.
