Mass media

technology Maturity 11-13 Vital Level 2 Next article →

Mass media is a way to reach huge audiences all at once.

It includes many different tools like books, movies, and the Internet. These tools can share news, stories, and even advertisements. Some people call it "mainstream media" when it reaches a very large number of people. However, even small groups can use mass media technology to share their own ideas. This type of communication is often called a "one-to-many" process. This means one person or company sends information out to many listeners or readers at the same time.

How does this work in real life? It starts with making the information and then sending it out.

In the past, this meant using a printing press to make many paper copies. Later, we used electronic ways to send signals through the air. This allowed radio and television to reach homes instantly. Today, digital media like the Internet and mobile phones make it very easy to share things. You can find information on websites or through a quick search on your phone. This way of working lets information travel very fast to many different places.

History shows us how these tools have changed over hundreds of years.

The first dated printed book was the Diamond Sutra from China in 868 AD. Later, Johannes Gutenberg invented a printing press with movable type in 1453. This invention helped books and newspapers spread across Europe much faster. By the early 1800s, fast steam printing presses and railroads helped newspapers reach far away cities. In the 1920s, people began using the term "the media." By the 1950s, radio and television became the main ways most people got their information.

There are many important facts about how the media industry grows.

Between 1985 and 2018, there were about 76,720 deals made in the media industry. These deals were worth a huge amount of money, around US$5,634 billion. The largest deal ever was when AOL Inc. bought Time Warner for over US$164,000 million. Many large companies own much of the media we see today. In the United States, 41 of the top 50 media deals involved American companies. This shows how much power these large media organizations can have.

Mass media is a big part of our everyday lives. It can act like a lens that shapes how we see the world.

For example, it can highlight certain news stories to make people think about specific issues. This is sometimes called "agenda setting." However, media can also create stereotypes. A stereotype is a fixed and often unfair idea about a group of people. Because media can show only one side of a story, it can change how we perceive others. It is important to notice how the media tells its stories.
