It is a landlocked area, which means it has no ocean coastline. To the north, it sits near the Pyrenees mountains. It shares borders with France and several other Spanish regions like La Rioja and Aragon. The capital city of this place is Pamplona.

Navarre is a place where the landscape changes very quickly. In the north, you might see green and wet areas. In the south, the land becomes more dry and semi-arid. The weather can be quite unpredictable as well. Summers might bring sudden heat waves, while winters stay relatively mild.

The history of this land is very long and deep. Long ago, the Vascones people lived on the southern slopes of the mountains. They lived alongside the Roman Empire for a time. Later, a strong Basque kingdom was established around the year 824. A leader named Iñigo Arista was elected as the first king. This kingdom reached its greatest height under a ruler named Sancho III. During his time, the kingdom was very powerful and large.

Even when the kingdom lost some political power, it stayed important. Many traders and pilgrims traveled through the area on the Way of Saint James.

There are many different ideas about where the name Navarre comes from. Some people think it relates to the Basque word for "brownish" or "multicolour." This might describe the land compared to the green mountains nearby. Another idea is that it comes from a word meaning "valley" or "plain."

The name has been used in records since the early 9th century. It appears in old writings about the Emperor Charlemagne. These names help us understand how people viewed the land in the past. Understanding these names helps connect the modern place to its ancient roots.

Navarre has faced many difficult times throughout its history. In 1512, troops invaded the land and changed how it was ruled. There were also periods of civil war between different groups. During the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, the region saw much hardship. Many people lost their lives during this violent time. After the war, the economy relied heavily on farming crops like wheat and olives. People also had to rely on smuggling to get goods across borders.

These events shaped the community into what it is today.

Today, Navarre is an autonomous community within Spain. This means it has its own local government and its own Parliament. One very interesting thing is how it handles money. Unlike most other parts of Spain, Navarre has almost full responsibility for its own taxes. It uses this money to run schools, protect the environment, and build houses. The local government makes many of the rules for the people living there. This setup allows the region to keep much of its unique identity. It remains a place where history and modern life meet.
