It covers England, Scotland, and Wales. Many people confuse it with Network Rail, but they are different. Network Rail owns the tracks, stations, and signals. National Rail is a name used to promote passenger services. It helps different train companies work together as one system. This makes it easier for people to travel across the country.

Most tickets are inter-available. This means one ticket can work on many different train companies. You can buy through tickets for a whole journey between any two stations. There are different types of tickets to choose from. Advance tickets are for a specific time and route. Off-peak tickets let you travel when the trains are not busy. You can also buy season tickets for many trips over a long time.

In the past, the railway was run differently. From 1965 until 1997, the British Railways Board ran the services. They used the brand name British Rail. In 1997, the system was privatised. This meant services moved to private train operating companies. In 1999, the National Rail logo was introduced by a group called ATOC.

There are twenty-five privately owned train operating companies. These companies used to have franchises, but now they use operating contracts. The Rail Delivery Group represents these companies. They manage the National Rail Enquiries service. The National Rail website is very busy. It handles about 2.5 million journey plans every weekday. On busy days, it can have more than 10 million visitors. Since March 2020, the Department for Transport collects all ticket money.

National Rail connects to many things you might already know. For example, the London Underground shares some tracks with National Rail. Some special lines, like the Elizabeth line, are part of National Rail. You can even use an Oyster card or a contactless card in London.

Not all trains are part of this brand, though. The Eurostar is not part of National Rail. Some small heritage railways are also separate. They often run for fun rather than for public transport. Even so, they sometimes connect to the National Rail tracks.
