JR runs many types of trains, including the fast Shinkansen. These high-speed trains help people travel between cities very quickly.

To understand how JR works, we must look at how it started. Before 1987, the government owned all the trains. This was called the Japanese National Railways, or JNR.

By the 1970s, the business faced some hard jobs. The cost to pay workers went up, but ticket prices did not. In 1987, the government decided to divide and privatize JNR. This means they split the large government group into smaller, independent companies.

The JNR Settlement Corporation helped by taking on much of the old debt.

These companies work in different ways based on who owns them. Four companies are fully privatized and publicly traded. These are JR East, JR Central, JR West, and JR Kyushu.

You can buy shares in these companies on the market. Other companies are still owned by the state. JR Hokkaido, JR Shikoku, and JR Freight are overseen by a public agency. This agency is called the Japan Railway Construction, Transport, and Technology Agency.

There are many specific facts about these companies and their work. In 1988, the seven JR companies made a total profit of ¥ 88.9 million.

Some companies operate in specific areas, like JR Hokkaido in the north. Others, like JR Freight, work all across the nation. The group also has two non-operating companies to help. One is the Railway Technical Research Institute, which studies new things like SCMaglev.

The other is Railway Information Systems, which manages the MARS ticket system.

Even though there are many companies, they still act like one big system. They use the same ticketing rules that they got from the old JNR.

This means you can travel across different JR areas easily. You can often use one ticket without needing to buy a new one. Some special passes, like the Japan Rail Pass, work on all JR lines.

This makes traveling through Japan feel very smooth for everyone. It is just like how different bus routes might use the same kind of ticket.
