Amtrak is the national passenger railroad company in the United States.

Its name is a portmanteau, which means it is a blend of the words "America" and "track." The company provides intercity rail service across almost every state in the lower United States. It even runs through three provinces in Canada. Amtrak is important because it keeps passenger trains moving across long distances. It manages a huge network of more than 500 stations.

How Amtrak works involves a mix of owned and shared paths. The company directly owns some of its tracks. However, it also operates on many lines owned by other railroad companies.

Most trains travel at speeds of 79 or 110 miles per hour. Some special lines are much faster. The Northeast Corridor can support top speeds of 150 miles per hour. This allows people to travel quickly between busy cities. Amtrak manages these many different paths to keep people moving.

Before Amtrak, private companies ran all the passenger trains.

In 1916, almost everyone traveling between cities used the rails. By the middle of the 20th century, things changed. People began using cars, buses, and airplanes more often. This made it very hard for private railroads to make money. Many companies faced a crisis as their passenger service declined. To fix this, the United States Congress passed the Rail Passenger Service Act. President Richard Nixon signed this law in October 1970.

It started as a quasi-public corporation. This means it is managed like a business but receives government funding. The company is run by a Board of Directors. This board includes the Secretary of Transportation and the CEO. In the 2025 fiscal year, Amtrak had 22,100 employees. They served a total of 34.5 million passengers. The company also earned $2.7 billion in adjusted ticket revenue.

Nearly 87,000 passengers ride more than 300 trains every single day. Most of these travelers come from the ten largest metropolitan areas. About 83 percent of all passengers take trips shorter than 500 miles. This shows that many people use trains for shorter, local journeys. Amtrak connects large cities to the rest of the country. It serves as a vital way for people to travel without a car.
