Nathanael West was a talented American writer and screenwriter. He is best known for his dark and satirical novels. Satire is a way of using humor to show problems in society. His two most famous books are Miss Lonelyhearts and The Day of the Locust. One book is set in the world of newspapers. The other is set in the busy film industry of Hollywood. People still study his work today because of his unique style.

West had a very interesting way of working on his stories. He often wrote during his quiet night jobs. For example, he worked as a manager at the Sutton Hotel in New York City. He also worked at the Hotel Kenmore Hall on East 23rd Street. These night shifts gave him the time he needed to write. He used real things he saw at these hotels for his stories. One hotel experience even inspired a part of his famous novel.

His life began as Nathan Weinstein in New York City. He was born on October 17, 1903, to Jewish parents. His father, Max Weinstein, was a construction contractor. Nathan went to college at Tufts College and later Brown University. He was a very big reader of many different books. He liked poets and writers from France and Britain. While in Paris, he decided to change his name to Nathanael West.

West lived through many different jobs and places. In 1931, he published his first novel, The Dream Life of Balso Snell. He later moved to Hollywood to work as a scriptwriter for Columbia Pictures. He wrote many movie scripts, including some called B movies. One of these was a film called Five Came Back in 1939. He also worked with RKO Radio Pictures on a film called Suspicion. He wrote that specific screenplay in only seven weeks.

West died in a car accident on December 22, 1940. He was driving in El Centro, California, after a hunting trip in Mexico. He was traveling with his wife, Eileen McKenney. His death happened just one day after his friend F. Scott Fitzgerald died. Even though his books did not sell much at first, his fame grew later. In 1957, a company called New Directions published his collected novels. Today, his stories help us understand the history of American ideas.
