He was born in Philadelphia in 1906 to immigrant parents. His father, Louis, was Russian-Jewish and his mother, Pearl, was Romanian-Jewish. Odets left high school after two years to follow his passion. He worked as a radio announcer and even called himself "The Rover Reciter." He also worked as a drama critic to see many shows. These early jobs helped him learn about the world of theater. His work became very important during the Great Depression.

Odets became a founding member of the Group Theatre in 1931. This company was very special in American history. They used a new way of acting called Method Acting. This style was based on ideas from a Russian director named Constantin Stanislavski. Lee Strasberg helped develop this technique further. Odets learned a lot by watching other actors from the wings. He even understudied the actor Luther Adler in a play called Success Story. This helped him understand how to write powerful dialogue for the stage.

His first big success came with a play called Waiting for Lefty. It was performed on January 6, 1935, in New York City. The play was inspired by a taxi strike in 1934. It used many different scenes to show the hard lives of workers. The play was so exciting that the audience stood up to clap. Because it was so political, some cities even banned it. Another masterpiece was Awake and Sing!, which focused on a Jewish family in the Bronx.

This play was one of the first to show a Jewish family on Broadway.

Odets wrote many other famous plays throughout his long career. His play Golden Boy was a very big success on Broadway in 1937. Later, he wrote Rocket to the Moon, which appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1938. He also moved to Hollywood to write films for a while. In 1950, he wrote The Country Girl, which was a hit. This story was later made into a movie with stars like Grace Kelly. Even when some plays did not make money, he kept writing about the human spirit.

Many great writers were inspired by the way Odets told stories. Famous names like Arthur Miller and Neil Simon learned from his work. He showed how plays could talk about real social problems. His characters often struggled against hard times or unfair systems. He believed that the human spirit could stay strong against any opponent. Even though other writers became more famous later, Odets changed American theater forever. He bridged the gap between acting techniques and powerful, real-life storytelling.
