Nampo is a major city in North Korea. It is the country's fourth-largest city by population. The city sits on the northern shore of the Taedong River estuary. This means it is where the river meets the sea.

Nampo is located about 50 km southwest of the capital, Pyongyang. Because it is on the water, it is an important seaport for the country.

Most of the land here is low and flat. About 82% of the city is below 50 metres high. You can find some mountains in the south and east. The highest point is Osok-san, which is 566 metres tall.

Many different industries help the city's economy grow. Nampo is a very important center for shipbuilding. It can build both cargo ships and warships.

There are also large factories that make steel and glass. A company called Pyeonghwa Motors has worked there to build cars. The city even has a large smelting complex to make copper, zinc, and lead.

Some of these factories were built near the districts of Waudo-guyok and Hunggu-guyok. The city's growth has been supported by a lot of investment from the state.

Nampo has a very long and interesting history. A long time ago, the area belonged to Gojoseon. Later, it was part of the Goguryeo kingdom. During the Goryeo dynasty, the area was split into different counties. In the late Goryeo period, it was known as Chungnampo.

Once North Korea was liberated, the name was changed back to Nampo to remove the old colonial name.

Agriculture and fishing are also very important here. The land near the Taedong River is great for farming. Farmers use land reclamation to create new areas for growing rice.

About 47.8% of the agricultural land is made of paddy fields. Many people also grow vegetables and fruit in orchards. The apples grown in Ryonggang county are very famous. The fishing industry is also one of the most important on the west coast. Thousands of birds visit the local lakes and tidelands every year.

Traveling to and from Nampo is easy because of good transport links. The Youth Hero Motorway connects the city to Pyongyang.

This road was finished in the year 2000. It was named to honor the young people who helped build it. People in the city also use a trolleybus system. These are buses that run on electricity from overhead wires.

The city has also worked hard to improve its water and electricity. In 2020, the city was even given a new seaside look. Many buildings were painted blue, orange, and brown to make the city look bright.
