Music of Polynesia

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Polynesia is a vast area in the Pacific Ocean. It forms a large triangle between New Zealand, Hawaii, and Easter Island. Music is a vital part of life for these people. It is often tied to dance and oral stories. Many people see music and dance as one single art form. This connection helps keep their traditions alive and strong.

Musical styles have changed over many years. In the 1790s, Christian missionaries arrived in the islands. They brought hymns, which are religious songs. Some native musical styles were even banned at that time. People kept their traditions alive by mixing them with new styles. This led to polyphonic singing, where many voices sing different parts. Brass bands also became a common part of the culture.

Traditional instruments still play a big role today. In Tonga, musicians use a nose flute to make music. The islands of Rarotonga use special wooden drums. Musicians also use the ukulele in Pacific reggae. This style of reggae sounds different than others. It uses island drums and the ukulele for its rhythm. Some islands like Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa even have cassette industries.

New tools have also shaped the sound of the islands. In the late 1800s, the Spanish guitar arrived in Hawaii. This led to a style called slack key music. Later, the steel guitar became very popular in Hawaii. Famous musicians like Bill Sevesi and Bill Wolfgramm led dance bands. These Hawaiian sounds even helped influence country music later on. This shows how island music can travel far away.

Modern artists continue to blend the old with the new. Kalani Pe'a is a famous Hawaiian singer and songwriter. He wins Grammy awards for his talented musical work. He performs oli aloha, which are chants of greeting and thanks. He also translates popular songs into the Hawaiian language. Other groups like Herbs play Pacific reggae in New Zealand. New genres like Urban Pasifika mix hip hop with island roots.
