Native Hawaiian music is often used for religious reasons. It features beautiful chanting, known as mele, and dance music called hula. These traditions help people share stories about their history and their gods. Some chants are even used to name people or to pray.

This music is very important to the people who live there.

Performing this music involves many special steps and tools. Dancers often use items to help keep the rhythm. They might use a single gourd called an ipu. They might also use feathered gourd rattles called ʻuliʻuli. Other dancers use split bamboo sticks called puʻili or small lava stones called iliili.

Chanting can be done alone without any instruments. This is called mele oli. When a group performs chants with drums and dancing, it is called mele hula pahu. These performances require a lot of skill and training.

Music in Hawaii has a long and changing history. In the late 1700s, people from other lands arrived. This brought new sounds like European hymns. Later, Mexican cowboys, called paniolos, brought the guitar to the islands.

Portuguese immigrants also brought a small instrument called the braguinha. This little instrument helped lead to the creation of the ukulele. By 1906, the first Hawaiian recordings were made by a company called Victor. These recordings helped people far away hear the music.

There are many important dates and places to know. The Honolulu Symphony Orchestra is very old. It was founded in 1900 and is the oldest orchestra west of the Rocky Mountains.

Hawaii also has many large places for music. The Waikiki Shell is an outdoor theater in Kapiolani Park. It can hold 2,400 people in seats and 6,000 more on the grass. The Merrie Monarch Hula Festival is a huge event that brings hula groups from around the world. There are even special festivals just for slack-key and steel guitars.

Today, Hawaiian music connects many different cultures. It has influenced the music of other Pacific islands.

Some styles, like hapa haole, mix Hawaiian elements with the English language. In the 1970s, a time called the Hawaiian Renaissance helped bring many traditions back. Now, you can hear everything from Hawaiian Rap to Jawaiian. Whether it is played in a hotel or at a big festival, the music stays a vital part of life. It continues to grow and change every single day.
