He was born in Amsterdam in 1820. His father was a sea captain from North Holland. As a young man, Eduard worked as a clerk at a textile firm. Later, he traveled to the Dutch East Indies, which is now Indonesia. He worked for the government in many different roles. He served as a comptroller in Natal, North Sumatra, in 1842. He also held positions in Menado, Ambon, and Lebak.

Working for the government was often very difficult for him.

He faced many problems with money and official funds. He once faced a reprimand from General Andreas Victor Michiels. This happened because of financial gaps in his district. Eduard eventually paid back the money from his own pocket. He also struggled with gambling and many debts throughout his life. These hard times shaped the way he saw the world.

He used his writing to speak out against unfairness.

In 1860, he published his most famous novel, Max Havelaar. This book was a satire about the colonial system. It told stories about the abuses he saw in the Dutch East Indies. The book was read all over Europe and caused big debates. He also wrote a series of books called Ideën, or "Ideas." He even wrote plays, like Vorstenschool, which was a success on stage.

Many famous people throughout history have admired his work.

The thinker Sigmund Freud listed him as one of his favorite writers. Other famous names like Thomas Mann and Hermann Hesse also liked him. You can see his legacy in museums today. There is a Multatuli Museum in Amsterdam where he was born. Another museum opened in Rangkasbitung, Indonesia, in 2018. His life shows how writing can be used to share important truths.
