Much of his work was shaped by the Second World War. He was born in Haarlem in 1927. During the war, his father worked for a German bank. His mother, Alice Schwarz, was Jewish. Because of these things, the war was a huge part of his life. He once said that he did not just write about the war. He said he "was" the war. This helped him write very powerful stories about that time.
