It sits between the island of Madagascar and the country of Mozambique. This channel is about 1,700 km long. At its narrowest point, it is 419 km across. The water can be very deep in some spots. It reaches a depth of 3,292 m off the coast of Mozambique.

This area is a very important part of the ocean.

Water moves through the channel in a special way. A warm stream called the Mozambique Current flows southward. This current eventually leads into the Agulhas Current near Southern Africa.

Many islands are found within these waters. The Comoros islands include Grande Comore, Mohéli, and Anjouan. Some islands, like Mayotte, belong to France. Other small islands like Europa and Juan de Nova are also part of France. There are also many islands belonging to Mozambique, such as the Quirimbas Islands.

History has happened in these waters for a long time. In November 1939, a British tanker called the Africa Shell was sailing through the channel.

A German battleship named the Admiral Graf Spee spotted the ship. The German crew boarded the tanker and took its food. They even took a small amount of wine. Eventually, the tanker was sunk by charges. Later, in 1942, the channel became a place for fighting during the Battle of Madagascar. These events show how important this path has been.

There are many interesting things to find under the waves. The St. Lazarus Banks is a seamount in the channel. A seamount is a mountain that rises from the ocean floor.

These banks rise from 2,000 m up to only 12 m deep. This area is famous for having many different kinds of marine life. Because of this, it is a major place for deep-sea fishing. The islands and reefs provide many resources like fish and other materials.

Today, the channel is one of the busiest paths in the world. About 30% of all the world's tanker traffic moves through here.

Many large ships use this route to carry oil. Because it is so busy, it can sometimes be a difficult place to travel. The South African Navy has done patrols to stop pirates since 2011. This helps keep the many ships that pass through the channel safe.
