The Mozambique Channel is a major arm of the Indian Ocean.

It sits between the island of Madagascar and the Southeast African nation of Mozambique. This waterway is roughly 1,700 km long. At its narrowest point, it is 419 km across. The channel reaches depths of 3,292 m. This deep point is about 230 km off the coast of Mozambique.

It serves as a vital passage for global maritime travel.

Water moves through the channel via a specific mechanism. A warm stream called the Mozambique Current flows in a southward direction. This current eventually flows into the Agulhas Current. The Agulhas Current is located off the east coast of Southern Africa. This movement of warm water is a key part of the ocean's system.

The channel's boundaries are clearly defined by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). To the north, a line connects the River Rovuma estuary to Ras Habu. This point is the northernmost part of Ile Grande Comore. The eastern boundary is the west coast of Madagascar. The southern boundary runs from Cap Sainte-Marie to Ponto do Ouro. The western boundary is the coast of Southern Africa.

Many different islands and landforms exist within the channel. The Comoros islands include Grande Comore, Mohéli, and Anjouan. France also has a presence through Mayotte and the Scattered Islands. These Scattered Islands belong to the district of French Southern and Antarctic Lands. They include the Glorioso Islands, Juan de Nova Island, Europa Island, and Bassas da India. Mozambique also has several island groups. These include the Primeiras and Segundas Archipelago, Ilha do Fogo, and the Quirimbas Islands.

These islands provide important exclusive economic zones (EEZs). These zones are rich in fisheries and potential hydrocarbons.

One notable underwater feature is the St. Lazarus Banks. This is a seamount, which is an underwater mountain. It sits about 50 to 75 nautical miles off the Quirimbas Archipelago. The banks rise from a depth of approximately 2,000 m. At their shallowest point, they are only 12 m deep. This feature is famous for its marine biodiversity. Because of this life, it is a major location for deep-sea fishing.

The banks represent a unique habitat within the deep channel.

The channel has a complex history involving international conflict. On 15 November 1939, the British tanker Africa Shell was sailing through the channel. It was traveling from Quelimane to Lourenço Marques under Captain Patrick Dove. The German Pocket Battleship Admiral Graf Spee spotted the tanker. The battleship was under the command of Captain Hans Langsdorff. The German crew boarded the tanker and took its food and wine. They then used scuttling charges to sink the Africa Shell. Captain Dove argued the ship was in Portuguese territorial waters. Later, in 1942, the channel was a clashpoint during the Battle of Madagascar.

Today, the channel is a central part of global shipping. It carries about 30% of the world's tanker traffic. This high volume of ships makes the area very significant for trade. However, the region also faces modern challenges. An Islamist insurrection in northern Mozambique has caused some disruptions. To help with safety, the South African Navy has conducted anti-piracy patrols. These patrols have occurred intermittently since 2011. Keeping the channel safe is important for the many ships that pass through.

Political tensions also exist regarding the islands in the channel. France maintains a military presence via Réunion and patrols the Scattered Islands. However, Madagascar has legally contested the French presence. The Malagasy believe these islets were dependencies of Madagascar. They believe the islands should have reverted to Madagascar after independence. Additionally, the Comoros claim Mayotte from France. These disputes over sovereignty and maritime borders continue to shape the region's politics.
