It sits within the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades. You can see its snowy peak from many places. It rises high above the city of Bellingham in Whatcom County. People in British Columbia can see it from Vancouver or Nanaimo. Even people in Seattle can see it on clear days.

It is the third highest mountain in Washington State.

The mountain is famous for its heavy ice and snow. It has the heaviest glacier cover of the Cascade volcanoes after Mount Rainier. In fact, it has more snow and ice than all other Cascades volcanoes combined.

This mountain is one of the snowiest places on Earth. In 1999, the nearby Mount Baker Ski Area set a world record. They recorded the most snowfall in a single season. The mountain stays white because of these thick glaciers.

Indigenous peoples have known this mountain for thousands of years. The Nooksack people call it Koma Kulshan, which means "white mountain."

They used the mountain to hunt for deer, elk, and bear. They also gathered berries and mountain goat wool. The Upper Skagit people call it a "permanently snow-covered mountain." Different groups used different parts of the slopes for hunting. These families lived near the north and south faces.

Explorers from Europe arrived much later to map the area. In 1790, a Spanish explorer named Gonzalo Lopez de Haro sketched the mountain. He called it "Great Mount Carmel." Later, the British explorer George Vancouver gave it its English name. He named it after 3rd Lieutenant Joseph Baker.

The first successful climb happened in 1868. A group led by Edmund Thomas Coleman finally reached the summit. They climbed up the Middle Fork Nooksack River to get there.

Geologists study the volcano to understand how it works. The current cone is likely only 80,000 to 140,000 years old. It sits on top of an older volcano called Black Buttes. Mount Baker has two main craters near the top. One is the ice-filled Carmelo Crater. The other is Sherman Crater, which sits south of the summit.

This crater has many fumaroles that vent steam and gas.
