The mountain is very white. This is because it is covered in thick ice. It has more snow and ice than most other volcanoes in the area. It is one of the snowiest places on Earth. In 1999, a nearby ski area set a world record for snow!

Native peoples have lived near the mountain for a long time. The Nooksack people call it Koma Kulshan. This means "white mountain." They used the mountain for hunting and gathering food.

Mount Baker is also active. It has two main craters. One is named Sherman Crater. It sits south of the summit. Many fumaroles, or vents, let out steam and gas there.
