Mount Baker has two main craters near the top. One is the ice-filled Carmelo Crater. The other is Sherman Crater, which sits south of the summit.

The volcano is famous for its extreme amounts of ice and snow. Mount Baker has the second-most glacier cover in the Cascade Range. Only Mount Rainier has more glacier cover than Mount Baker. In fact, the volume of ice on this mountain is greater than all other Cascade volcanoes combined, except for Rainier. 
The mountain's structure is built from layers of lava and volcanic breccia. Volcanic breccia is a rock made of broken fragments of minerals or rock. The current volcanic cone is relatively young. Scientists believe it is likely no more than 140,000 years old. Some estimates suggest it may be only 80,000 to 90,000 years old. This cone sits on top of an older volcanic structure called Black Buttes. Black Buttes was active between 500,000 and 300,000 years ago. Much of the older volcanic history was erased by glaciers. These thick ice sheets eroded the earlier volcanic edifices during the last ice age.
There are two main craters located near the summit of the mountain. The first is the Carmelo Crater. This crater is filled with ice and sits under the summit ice dome. It was the source of the last cone-building eruptions. The highest point of the mountain is Grant Peak. Grant Peak sits on the southeast rim of the Carmelo Crater. The second crater is the Sherman Crater. 


Indigenous peoples have lived near the mountain for thousands of years. The Nooksack and Upper Skagit peoples used the mountain for hunting and gathering. The Nooksack people call the mountain Koma Kulshan. This name means "white mountain." It refers to the glacier-covered summit above 7,000 feet. They also have names for the slopes and the meadows. The name for the meadows means "many meadows." The mountain was a source of wealth for these tribes. They gathered mountain goat wool and various foods. Nooksack families used the river valleys to reach alpine summer camps.
European explorers arrived and recorded the mountain much later. In 1790, the Spanish explorer Gonzalo Lopez de Haro mapped the area. He called the mountain "Great Mount Carmel." Later, the British explorer George Vancouver named it Mount Baker. He named it after 3rd Lieutenant Joseph Baker of the HMS Discovery. 
Mount Baker remains a very active part of the landscape. It has the second-most thermally active crater in the Cascade Range. This activity follows Mount St. Helens. While the volcano does not have many explosive eruptions, it can be dangerous. The most frequent destructive events are lahars. A lahar is a violent debris flow of mud and volcanic material. These can be caused by magma movement or heavy rainfall. Even without large eruptions, the mountain's movement and weather create a powerful environment.
