Morogoro

Morogoro is a significant city located in the eastern part of Tanzania. It serves as the capital of the Morogoro Region. The city sits approximately 196 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam. Geographically, it is positioned at the foothills of the Uluguru Mountains. Some people use the informal name Mji kasoro bahari to describe it. This phrase translates to "city short of an ocean" or "city short of a port." This name highlights its distance from the coast.

Water management is a critical challenge for the city's residents. The Mindu Dam is the primary water source for Morogoro. It is situated on the Ngerengere River. This dam meets about 80% of the total water demands for the city. However, the dam has faced many issues since it began in 1978. A reservoir formed behind the dam, which caused a rise in bilharzia infection rates. Additionally, mercury runoff from nearby gold mining activities has polluted the water supply. Deforestation near the dam has also caused sedimentation to increase. This buildup of sediment reduces the dam's overall capacity.

To address these water problems, a large project was launched. In 2012–13, a program was initiated with an $8.31 million budget. This program was funded by USAID/MCC. The goal was to restore the quality of drinking water from the Uluguru Mountains. The plan involved establishing an inlet and a treatment plant. This plant was placed near the Regional Governance offices at the top of Boma Road. This work aimed to assist the Morogoro Water Supply Authority, also known as MORUWASA. It helped ensure better quality and more available water for the community.

Morogoro is also a major center for education and specialized training. The city is home to Sokoine University of Agriculture, or SUA. Other institutions include the Muslim University of Morogoro and Jordan University College. St. Joseph University College is another notable school in the area. Mzumbe University is located about 26 kilometers south along the Iringa Highway. The municipality also hosts the Morogoro Teachers College and the Livestock Training Institute, or LITI. Some secondary schools have very long histories. Kilakala Girls High School is one of the oldest in the country. The Morogoro International School was also established in 1975.

Science and specialized animal training happen within the city as well. The non-profit organization APOPO operates in Morogoro. They train Gambian pouched rats, which are known as HeroRATS. These rats perform very important tasks for human safety. They are trained to detect landmines in the ground. They can also be used to detect tuberculosis, which is a disease. This work shows how animals can assist in medical and safety efforts.

Transportation in Morogoro is diverse and follows specific local patterns. Many people use public buses known as dala dalas to commute. For trips within the town, fares usually cost between Tsh. 500 and 700. Other popular choices for quicker travel include motorcycles called boda bodas. People also use three-wheeled vehicles known as Bajajs. The cost for these vehicles depends on the distance of the trip. The city is also a hub for agriculture and industry. Many sisal plantations are located throughout the region.

Culture and history are deeply woven into the life of the city. Morogoro has a rich musical heritage that spans many decades. The Morogoro Jazz Band was established in 1944. Salim Abdullah, the founder of the Cuban Marimba Band, also comes from Morogoro. During the 1960s and 1970s, Mbaraka Mwinshehe was a famous musician here. He was a highly influential singer-songwriter and lead guitarist in Tanzania. Additionally, the Amani Center provides support to over 3,400 disabled individuals in nearby villages.

Despite its many strengths, the city has faced serious hardships. On August 10, 2019, a fuel tanker exploded in the town. This was a devastating disaster for the local population. The explosion resulted in the loss of 100 lives. At least 47 other people were injured during the event. This incident remains one of the most significant fuel-related disasters in Tanzania. It serves as a somber part of the city's recent history.
