Owerri is a major urban center located in Nigeria. It serves as the capital city of Imo State. The city sits in the heart of a region known as Igboland. Owerri is the largest city in the state. It is followed in size by the cities of Orlu, Okigwe, and Ohaji/Egbema. The city is organized into three distinct Local Government Areas. These are Owerri Municipal, Owerri North, and Owerri West. As of 2016, the population was estimated at 1,401,873 people.

Geography and climate define the physical experience of the city. Owerri is located within a lush rain forest. This environment provides a tropical wet climate according to the Köppen-Geiger system. Rain falls during most months of the year. There is only a brief dry season. During this dry season, the Harmattan weather pattern affects the city. This wind is less intense here than in other Nigerian cities. The average temperature stays around 26.4 °C. The city is bordered by two significant bodies of water. The Otamiri River lies to the east. The Nworie River sits to the south.

The economy and resources of the region are quite diverse. Because it sits in a rain forest, the land is fertile. Farmers produce many agricultural goods like yams, cassava, and corn. They also grow taro, rubber, and various palm products. Below the surface, the ground holds great value. Like much of Igboland, Owerri sits on huge reserves of natural gas and crude oil. Trade and transport are vital to the city's movement. The Relief market serves as the main marketplace. Major roads like Port Harcourt Road and Aba Road connect the city to other places. For air travel, people use the Sam Mbakwe Airport in Obiangwu. This airport provides flights to Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Enugu. It also functions as an alternate for the Port Harcourt airport.

History shaped the modern identity of Owerri. The city was founded in the 14th century CE by Ekwem Oha. It later became a central location during a period of conflict. In 1969, Owerri was the third and final capital of the Republic of Biafra. This was a secessionist state that faced significant challenges. The capital had to move frequently because Nigerian troops captured older capitals. Enugu and Umuahia served as the previous capitals before the seat moved to Owerri. Today, the city contains statuary to memorialize this war. Many other historical artifacts are kept in a museum in Umuahia, located in Abia State.
