geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Morogoro is a busy city in eastern Tanzania. It sits at the foothills of the Uluguru Mountains. This city is the capital of the Morogoro Region. It is about 196 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam. Some people call it Mji kasoro bahari. This name means "city short of an ocean."

Water is very important for the people living here. The Mindu Dam sits on the Ngerengere River. This dam provides about 80% of the city's water. However, keeping the water clean is a hard job. Mercury from gold mining can pollute the supply. Cutting down trees also causes dirt to build up in the dam. In 2012, a program spent $8.31 million to help. It worked to make the water from the mountains better.

Learning is a big part of life in Morogoro. Many students go to Sokoine University of Agriculture. There are also colleges like the Muslim University of Morogoro. Some schools are very old, like Kilakala Girls High School. The city also has the Morogoro International School. This school was started in 1975.

Special animals do important work in this city. An organization called APOPO trains Gambian pouched rats. These rats are known as HeroRATS. They are trained to find landmines. They can also find a sickness called tuberculosis.

Traveling around the city is quite interesting. People ride in public buses called dala dalas. These buses cost between Tsh. 500 and 700 for local trips. You can also ride on motorcycles called boda bodas. Some people use three-wheeled vehicles called Bajajs. Music is also a big part of the culture. The Morogoro Jazz Band was even started in 1944.
