It sits high up in a narrow valley at 1,700 metres above sea level. High mountains surround the city like a giant bowl. Because of these green, misty hills, some people call the area the "Scotland of Africa."

The heaviest rain usually falls between December and April. This rain helps the rich volcanic soil stay very fertile. Because the soil is so good, Mbeya is a "bread basket" for the country. This means it grows a huge amount of food for others to eat. Farmers here grow maize, rice, bananas, beans, and potatoes. They also grow special crops like coffee, tea, and cocoa to sell far away.

Mbeya has a long and interesting history. It was first founded as a gold mining town in the 1920s. This happened after a gold rush in 1906. Later, the TAZARA railway arrived and brought new people to the area. These people were farmers and small business owners. The British ruled the area until 1961. That same year, the Mbeya Region was officially created. Today, the city is a large metropolis with 649,000 people living in the urban area.
