It serves as the capital of the Mbeya region. The urban population of the city reached 649,000 in 2023. The wider Mbeya region contains approximately 2 million people. The city is a growing metropolis and a vital business centre. It connects Tanzania to neighboring countries like Malawi, Zambia, and Congo. Mbeya is situated at an altitude of 1,700 metres. It sprawls through a narrow highland valley. This valley is surrounded by a bowl of high mountains.

The geography of Mbeya creates a unique environment. The area is sometimes called the "Scotland of Africa." This nickname comes from the green, misty hills. The hills are covered in heather and bracken. These plants are actually more like the Fynbos found in South Africa.

The climate is a subtropical highland climate, known as Cwb. This means the summers are humid and the winters are dry. The weather is cold and dry from June until October. The heaviest rainfall occurs between December and April. This reliable rainfall falls on rich volcanic soil. This soil is very fertile and helps plants grow well.

Agriculture is the foundation of the local economy. Mbeya is one of the regions that form the bread basket of Tanzania. Because of the fertile soil, it is the largest producer of many foods. These include maize, rice, bananas, beans, potatoes, soya nuts, and wheat. Tanzania has a free market for these agricultural products. Mbeya transports massive amounts of maize to other parts of the country. The region also focuses on high-value export and cash crops. These include coffee, tea, cocoa, pyrethirum, and spices. Smallholder farmers also grow some tobacco. Animal husbandry is also common, with dairy cattle being the most frequent.

The history of Mbeya is tied to natural resources and transport. A gold rush occurred in 1906. This led to Mbeya being founded as a gold mining town in the 1920s. Later, the TAZARA railway arrived in the area. This railway attracted many farming migrants and small entrepreneurs. The British administered Mbeya and its district until 1961. In that same year, the Mbeya Region was officially created. Today, the city remains a central hub for the Southern Highlands. Some gold is still mined today by artisan miners in the rural Chunya District.

Transportation links Mbeya to the rest of the continent.

Loleza Mountain rises directly over and behind the town. Mount Rungwe is the highest mountain in the Mbeya region. It is a massive peak with ten or more dormant volcanic craters. It is one of the highest peaks in all of Tanzania. The forest around Mount Rungwe is a protected reserve. It contains montane forest and montane grassland. This forest is home to the threatened Abbott's duiker. It is also a place where you can find Colobus monkeys and Rungwe bush vipers. In 2005, scientists discovered a new large monkey species here called the Kipunji.

Mbeya is also a significant center for education and regional services. Many institutions of higher learning are located here. Teofilo Kisanji University offers courses in theology, business, and sciences. The Mbeya University of Science and Technology offers engineering degrees. Mzumbe University has a campus in the forest area. The Catholic University College of Mbeya provides degrees in education and law. The Tanzania Institute of Accountancy also has a campus near the airport. These schools attract students from many different places. Furthermore, the city hosts many zonal offices for major companies. These include the Bank of Tanzania and the Mbeya Cement Company.
