Giant pouched rat

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Giant pouched rats are large rodents from sub-Saharan Africa. These animals belong to the genus Cricetomys. They are known for having very large cheek pouches. These pouches help them carry food. They are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. They are also omnivores. This means they eat both plants and small animals. They especially like to eat insects and palm nuts.

These rats have a very special way of working with people. They are trained to be HeroRATs. They use their acute sense of smell to find things. They can sniff out TNT, which is a type of explosive. Because they are light, they do not trigger land mines. This makes them safe to use in dangerous areas. They can even find land mines hidden under the soil.

Training these rats is a careful process. It was developed by a Belgian man named Bart Weetjens. Training starts when the rats are only four weeks old. First, they get used to humans and different sounds. Then, they learn to associate a clicker with a food reward. They might get banana or banana-peanut paste. They must nose a hole containing TNT for five seconds. Finally, they practice wearing a harness on a lead outdoors.

HeroRATs do more than just find explosives. They also help find a sickness called tuberculosis. They sniff sputum samples to look for the germ. These rats are much faster than people in a lab. They can test 100 samples in just 20 minutes. A lab worker might take four days to do that. In Tanzania and Ethiopia, they help screen for this disease. They are very good at finding sickness early.

There are several different types of these giant rats. The Gambian pouched rat lives from Senegal to Kenya. The Southern giant pouched rat lives in places like Zimbabwe and Kenya. Another type is the Kivu giant pouched rat from Southern Africa. Emin's pouched rat lives in Tropical Africa and Madagascar. These rats are quite large in size. Their weights and lengths can vary between the different species. They are very important animals in many African countries.
