Located in the geographic center of the country, the city sits west of the former capital, Dar es Salaam. It is positioned south of Arusha and north of Iringa. To its east lies Morogoro. This central location makes it a vital hub for the nation. In July 2024, Dodoma became the third largest city in Tanzania. This ranking is based on both its population and its infrastructure.

The transition of the capital was a deliberate, long-term political strategy. In 1974, the Tanzanian government announced it would move the capital from the coast to the center. This decision followed a nationwide party referendum. The goal was to centralize the government and promote social and economic growth in the central region. By moving away from the coast, the government hoped to divert development from Dar es Salaam. This was intended to prevent too much wealth and power from concentrating in one single maritime city. The city officially became the national capital in 1996.

Designing a new capital involves complex urban planning. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) sought international expertise to create a master plan. They invited firms from Canada, Greece, and Japan to submit proposals. The Canadian firm, Project Planning Associates Ltd., won the contract. Their vision was unique compared to other planned capitals like Washington, D.C., or Brasília. They rejected rigid grid iron or radial layouts. Instead, they wanted the city to undulate and curve with the natural topography. The design followed a "garden city" model. This model uses green belts to separate residential zones from industrial areas. It was intended to feel like a "chief village" experienced on foot.

Following independence, the government struggled to implement the full original design. Many government offices and embassies resisted moving from Dar es Salaam. This meant that Dar es Salaam remains the commercial and maritime capital. However, significant progress has occurred in the 21st century. In May 2023, President Samia Suluhu unveiled the new State House. This event marked a historic step in moving government duties to the city.

Dodoma is more than just a collection of buildings; it is a nation-building project. It was designed to symbolize Tanzania's social and cultural values. By avoiding the high density and pollution of older big cities, it sought a different way of living. It remains a place where the urban landscape meets the rural heartland. This connection to the land is part of its identity as a central hub for the nation.
