Zanzibar City is a major administrative district in Tanzania. It is officially known as the Mjini District. People also call it Zanzibar or Jiji la Zanzibar in Swahili. The city serves as the capital of the Zanzibar Urban/West Region. It is the largest city on the island of Unguja.

The city sits on the west coast of Unguja. This is the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago. To the west, the district has a water border with the Indian Ocean. To the east, it is bordered by the Magharibi District. Zanzibar City is located north of the much larger city of Dar es Salaam. That city sits across the Zanzibar Channel. The map shows where the city sits along this coastline.

Zanzibar City is divided into two primary sections. The first section is Stone Town. This is the historical core of the city. It was once the capital of the Zanzibar Sultanate. Because of its unique culture and architecture, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

The second section is called Ng'ambo. In Swahili, this name literally means "The Other Side." Ng'ambo is a much larger and more modern area. It developed around Stone Town following the Zanzibar Revolution. This area contains many office buildings. It also has large apartment blocks, such as those found in the Michenzani neighbourhood. Historically, a creek separated these two areas. That creek has since been filled in. The street on the Stone Town side was once called Creek Road. It was later renamed Benjamin Mkapa Road.

The history of the city involves many different people and events. The first English ship arrived in the port in 1592. In 1824, Said bin Sultan established the capital of his kingdom here. He was the Sultan of Muscat and Oman. The city was also a major port for the East African slave trade. One famous slave trader who lived there was Tippu Tip. The history of slavery in the city was very heavy. In 1846, there were 360,000 enslaved people among 450,000 total inhabitants. In 1866, the explorer David Livingstone stayed in the city. He was preparing for his last expedition to Tanzania. Later, in 1892, Zanzibar was declared a free port.

The climate in Zanzibar City is classified as a tropical monsoon climate. This is known as the Am type in the Köppen climate classification. The weather is very similar to the rest of Unguja island. It is actually slightly hotter than the weather on Pemba island. The city has two distinct rainy seasons. Most of the rainfall occurs between March and May. A smaller rainy season happens between November and December. There are also drier periods. January and February are dry months. The longest dry season lasts from June to October.

Many people live and worship in the city. The population was 219,007 in 2022. Most places of worship in the city are Muslim mosques. However, there are also Christian churches and temples. These include the Roman Catholic Diocese of Zanzibar and the Anglican Church of Tanzania. Other groups include the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Baptist Convention of Tanzania. The city is also home to the Assemblies of God. Travelers can reach the city via the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport.

Administratively, the district is quite complex. It is divided into 45 wards. These wards belong to ten different parliamentary constituencies. For example, the Mji Mkongwe constituency includes the Shangani ward. The Mpendae constituency includes the Mpendae ward, which has a population of 13,252. Other constituencies include Amani, Chumbuni, Jangombe, Kikwajuni, Kwahani, Kwamtipura, Magomeni, and Rahaleo. This structure helps manage the large population living in the urban area.
