He has written over 100 books about many different ideas. Onfray is an atheist, which means he does not believe in a god. He also follows a way of life called hedonism. This is the idea of seeking joy and pleasure. He says we should find pleasure for ourselves and for others. However, we must never cause harm to anyone else to find that joy.

Onfray's way of thinking is very specific. He believes in a kind of "ethical hedonism." This means using our senses to enjoy the world. He thinks we should celebrate things like music, painting, and fine food. He wants people to use their brains and bodies to their fullest. This approach is meant to help people make better decisions in everyday life. He also thinks philosophy should be useful for art and politics.

Onfray was born in Argentan to a family of farmers.

When he was young, he went to a Catholic boarding school. He did not like this time in his life very much. Later, he studied hard and earned a degree in philosophy. He worked as a high school teacher in Caen for many years. He taught students from 1983 until 2002. This long career helped shape his views on teaching and learning.

One of his biggest projects is the "Counter-History of Philosophy." He has written nine books in this series. He wants to show ideas that come from the earth. He thinks many old books focus too much on heaven. Instead, he looks at thinkers who focus on the physical world. He also started the Université populaire in Caen. This is a university that is free for everyone. He uses the money he earns from his books to help pay for it. This school helps people who cannot afford regular college.

Onfray's books have been very popular in many places. His book *Atheist Manifesto* was a top seller in France and Italy.

He has also written about many famous thinkers like Nietzsche and Epicurus. Some people disagree with his ideas or find errors in his history. Even so, his influence is quite large. In 2014, astronomers even named an asteroid after him. It is called 289992 Onfray. This shows how much people talk about his work.
