He lived from 1868 to 1952. Maurras was known for many different jobs. He was a poet, a critic, and a politician. He also led a political movement called Action Française. This group wanted France to have a king again. This idea is known as monarchism. Maurras had many strong and controversial views. He believed in traditional ways of living. He started by writing about books and art. Later, he helped found the Action Française review in 1899. This review helped turn a nationalist group toward the political right. He also helped start a daily newspaper. His ideas were called Maurrassisme. This included a belief in "integral nationalism." He wanted to protect what he called the national heritage. He even thought about how groups could take control of a government.

His life changed as he grew older.

As a young man, he was raised Catholic. However, he became deaf and stopped believing in God. He became an agnostic during his youth. Even so, he still supported the Catholic Church. He did this for political reasons rather than faith. He was also very active during the Dreyfus affair. This was a famous and difficult time in French history. Maurras took a very hard stance during this period.

Many of Maurras's ideas were very unfair to others. He held views that were anti-Semitic and anti-liberal. He was also against communists and many other groups. Because of these views, the Catholic Church spoke out. In 1926, Pope Pius XI condemned Action Française. In 1927, several of his books were banned. Members of his group were even stopped from receiving church sacraments. In 1936, he was sent to prison for eight months. This happened after he made threats against a politician named Léon Blum.

During the Second World War, Maurras made difficult choices.

Today, people still debate his impact on history.
