He became very well known for his work with high-yield bonds. Many people called these "junk bonds" because they were risky. Even though they were risky, they could help businesses grow. Milken used these bonds to change how people trade money. This work made him one of the richest people in the world. By the year 2022, his net worth was about $6 billion.

Milken learned a lot about money during his school years. He grew up in Encino, California, in a middle-class Jewish family.

He graduated from Birmingham High School and later attended UC Berkeley. At Berkeley, he studied how different types of bonds work. He later earned an MBA from the Wharton School in Pennsylvania. While working at a firm called Drexel, he started a new department. This department focused on trading those high-yield bonds. He was very successful and earned a lot of money quickly.

His success led to some very big legal problems. In 1989, the government investigated him for breaking rules.

These rules are meant to keep money trading fairly. Milken eventually pleaded guilty to some charges regarding securities laws. He was sentenced to ten years in prison at first. However, his sentence was later reduced to two years. This happened because he helped the government by testifying. In February 2020, President Donald Trump gave him a pardon.

Milken also spent time building businesses that help people learn.

He helped start a company called Knowledge Universe in 1996. He also worked with Knowledge Learning Corporation. This company runs KinderCare Learning Centers for children. He even invested in an organization that provides online schooling. These businesses focus on education and helping students grow. He stayed as the chairman of Knowledge Universe until 2015. These roles show how he moved from finance to education.

Today, Milken uses much of his wealth to help others.
