Bobby Fischer was a famous American chess grandmaster. He was a child prodigy who grew up to become the eleventh World Chess Champion.

His talent was clear very early in his life. He won his first of eight US Championships at just 14 years old. In 1964, he achieved a perfect score of 11–0 in a tournament. This remains the only perfect score in the history of that event. His skill made him one of the most important players in the game.

Learning chess changed Fischer's life forever. He first learned the game in 1949 at age six. He and his sister Joan used instructions from a candy store set.

Later, he studied old games in books while on vacation. His mother, Regina, even placed an ad to find other children to play with him. This led him to meet Carmine Nigro, a great teacher. Nigro helped him grow into a master-level player through many lessons.

Fischer's rise to fame happened through many intense matches. He traveled to Cuba in 1956 for a chess tour. There, he played in a large exhibition at the Capablanca Chess Club.

At age 13, he became the youngest US Junior Champion ever. He also played a famous game against Donald Byrne in 1956. People call this "The Game of the Century" because of his bold moves. He eventually won the World Championship title in Reykjavík, Iceland.

His life also had many difficult and complicated moments. Fischer had many extreme views and made antisemitic statements. These views led to trouble with the US government later in life.

In 1992, he played an unofficial rematch against Boris Spassky in Yugoslavia. This match happened while the United Nations had an embargo on that land. Because of his actions, the US government issued a warrant for his arrest. He lived as an émigré for many years before moving to Iceland.

Even with these struggles, Fischer changed how the world plays chess. He wrote a famous book called My 60 Memorable Games in 1969.

This book is still essential reading for people who love the game. He also invented a new timing system for chess clocks. This system adds a small amount of time after every move. Most top players use this method in tournaments today. He even created a new version called Fischer random chess.
