Tigran Petrosian was a world-famous chess grandmaster from Armenia. People often called him "Iron Tigran" because of his amazing defensive skills. He did not try to attack wildly like some other players. Instead, he focused on being safe and making it very hard for his opponents to win. This cautious style helped him become the ninth World Chess Champion. He held this top title from 1963 until 1969.

To play at such a high level, Petrosian followed a very careful way of working. He studied famous chess books like "Chess Praxis" by Aron Nimzowitsch. He also learned from great players like José Raúl Capablanca. In his training, he used a scientific approach to the game. This meant he preferred solid moves over risky ones. He often used a specific way to start games called the Caro–Kann Defence.

Petrosian's journey began in Tbilisi, where he was born in 1929. He learned to play chess when he was only eight years old. Life was not always easy for him during World War II. He lost his parents and had to sweep streets to earn money. Even during hard times, he kept studying his game. By 1946, he had already become a Candidate Master.

His career was full of big wins and important numbers. He won the World Championship in 1963 by beating Mikhail Botvinnik with a score of 5 to 2. He also won the Soviet Championship four times in 1959, 1961, 1969, and 1975. In 1963, he won a big tournament in Curaçao to earn his chance at the title. He even studied chess logic at Yerevan State University. He wrote a special paper about how chess players think.

Petrosian's life shows how much hard work and health matter in sports. He used to go skiing for many hours every day to stay fit. He believed being strong helped him win very long matches. Even though he had trouble hearing, he still loved listening to classical music. He was a hero in Armenia and helped make chess popular there. Today, people honor him with statues and special stamps.
