Anand's journey with chess began when he was only six years old. His mother, Sushila, taught him how to play the game. He grew up in Chennai, but he also lived in Manila for a while. During his early years, he played the game with incredible speed. This earned him the nickname "Lightning Kid." He later became a "universal player," which means he is great at all styles. He can play very fast or very carefully. He uses focus and daily prayer to keep his mind ready for big games.

His rise to the top happened very quickly. In 1987, he became the first Indian to win the World Junior Chess Championship. Only one year later, in 1988, he became India's first grandmaster. A grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can earn. He won many junior titles in places like Coimbatore and Hong Kong. By age 16, he was already the national chess champion. He won that national title two more times as well. His early success showed the world he was a true talent.
