Vladimir Gusinsky

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Vladimir Gusinsky is a famous media tycoon from Russia. He is known for building many huge businesses. He started a group called Media Most. This group held many different companies. It included NTV, which was a major television channel. It also included the Segodnya newspaper and several magazines.

He became very powerful in the Russian media world. Some people even called him the Rupert Murdoch of Russia. This name compares him to a very famous media owner.

His business career grew in many different steps. First, he worked in the army in 1973. Later, he studied theater arts and graduated in 1979. He started small businesses making metal garages and jewelry. Then, he built Most Bank, which was a very large private bank. In 1994, his bank installed the first ATM in Russia. An ATM is a machine that lets people take out cash.

He later built a massive holding company to manage all his assets.

In the 1990s, Gusinsky changed how news worked in Russia. He and other experts founded NTV in 1993. This was the first private television channel in the country. NTV focused on news that was independent and unbiased. This means the news was not controlled by the government.

In 1998, his company even launched a satellite named Bonum 1. This satellite was built by a US company. It was the first private commercial satellite in Russia. It helped send TV signals directly to people's homes.

Things became very hard for him in the year 2000. The new Russian leader was Vladimir Putin. Gusinsky had a disagreement with the government leaders. NTV was investigating some scary building explosions in Moscow. The government wanted the news to stop these investigations. In June 2000, Gusinsky was arrested and put in prison.

The government offered him a deal to get his freedom. He had to sell his media companies for 300 million US dollars. This deal was called "shares for freedom."

After he sold his businesses, Gusinsky had to leave Russia. He moved away to stay safe and never returned. He said the deal was not fair because he was forced. The Russian government asked Interpol to arrest him later. Interpol is an international group that helps police. However, Interpol refused to help Russia. They said the arrest might be for political reasons.

Even though his companies were worth over 1.1 billion dollars, he had to sell them for much less. This story shows how hard it can be to run independent news.
