Johnson had a very unusual way of running. Most runners lift their knees high to gain speed. Instead, Johnson ran with a stiff, upright position and very short steps. This style went against what most experts believed was necessary for speed. He proved that his method worked by setting many world records. He held the world record for the 200 meters and the 400 meters. He even held the record for the indoor 400 meters.

His career included many historic moments and challenges. In 1991, he won his first world title in Tokyo. In 1992, he faced a hard time after getting food poisoning in Spain. This made him lose weight and strength before the Olympics. Despite this, he won a gold medal in the 4x400 meter relay. In 1996, he became a legend at the Atlanta Olympics. He was the only man to win both the 200m and 400m at one Olympics.

At the 1996 Olympics, he earned a special nickname. People called him "The Man With the Golden Shoes." He wore custom gold racing spikes made of a material called Zytel. His shoes were different sizes because his right foot was longer. His left shoe was a size 10.5, while his right was a size 11. In that same year, he ran the 200 meters in 19.32 seconds. This was a huge improvement over his previous world record.

Johnson's success stayed strong even as he got older. In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he won his fourth gold medal. He was the oldest gold medalist in track events shorter than 5000 meters. He later faced sadness when teammates used banned substances. Because of this, he chose to return his relay gold medal. Since retiring in 2001, he has worked as a commentator for the BBC. He helps fans understand track and field during many major global events.
