Young had a very special way of moving between these hurdles. Most runners used a set pattern of 13 strides. However, Young switched between 12 and 13 strides to stay fast. This unusual technique helped him find a rhythm that others could not match. He used his skill to become one of the best in the world.

His path to greatness involved a lot of focus and hard work. At UCLA, he decided to spend more time on the 400-meter hurdles. He worked with a coach named Andre Phillips to learn how to run in the wind.

Young even used a clever trick to help his mind stay ready. He placed small pieces of paper inside his running shoes. These notes had the number 46.89 written on them. He wanted to remind himself that running under 47 seconds was possible.

Young's most famous moment happened at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. He ran in lane 4 and started with a slow reaction to the starting gun.

He used a left leg lead to jump the hurdles. He quickly passed his competitors by using his special stride pattern. Near the end, he even caught his heel on a hurdle. Still, he finished with a huge burst of power. He won the gold medal and set a new world record of 46.78 seconds.

This record was a massive achievement for the sport of track and field. Young was the first person to ever break the 47-second barrier. His record was so strong that it stood for nearly 29 years. It was not broken until July 1, 2021, by Karsten Warholm.

Even after his racing days slowed down, Young stayed busy with many things. He spent time helping children at the Atlanta Boys and Girls Clubs.
