Young had a very special way of running. He would switch his steps between hurdles. Sometimes he took 12 steps. Other times he took 13 steps. This helped him move very fast.

In 1992, Young won a gold medal at the Olympics. He set a world record with a time of 46.78 seconds. He was the first person to run this race in under 47 seconds. To help him reach this goal, he put tiny notes in his shoes. The notes had his target time written on them. This helped him believe he could do it.

Young also won the World Championships in 1993. He won many other big races too. His record stood for nearly 29 years. In 2006, he joined the National Track & Field Hall of Fame. This is a special place for great athletes. Young is also an artist. His art is shown in a collection called Art of the Olympians.
