He is known for running very fast on a track. He competes in short and long sprint races. These include the 100 metres, 200 metres, and 400 metres. He is most famous for the 400 metres race. In this race, runners sprint around the track once. Van Niekerk is the current world and Olympic record holder for this event. His speed makes him a hero to many fans. He shows how much can be done with hard work.

Running these races requires great skill and timing. To set a world record, a runner must be very precise. At the 2016 Olympics, Van Niekerk had a reaction time of 0.181 seconds. This is how fast he moved when the race started. He ran the first 200 metres in 20.54 seconds. Then, he ran the final 200 metres in 22.49 seconds. He even won his race from lane eight. Usually, runners in that lane have a harder job because of the staggered start. He managed to beat everyone else despite this challenge.

Van Niekerk's journey to the top began in his early years. He was born in Kraaifontein to Wayne van Niekerk and Odessa Swarts. As a baby, he was born prematurely and needed a blood transfusion. He attended Bellville Primary and Simonberg Primary schools. Later, he moved to Bloemfontein in 2005. He went to Grey College and studied marketing at the University of the Free State. He first showed his talent for speed while playing rugby in junior school. He even played on the same team as his cousin, Cheslin Kolbe.

His career is full of amazing numbers and big wins. In 2015, he won the gold medal at the World Championships in Beijing. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he ran the 400 metres in 43.03 seconds. This broke the old record of 43.18 seconds set by Michael Johnson in 1999. He is a very rare athlete. He is the first person to run the 100m in under 10 seconds, the 200m in under 20, and the 400m in under 44. He also ran a 300m race in 30.81 seconds in 2017. This was faster than the previous world-best time.

Even great athletes face hard times and must keep going. In 2017, Van Niekerk tore a ligament in his knee during a rugby match. This injury meant he could not compete during 2018. He spent that whole year in intense rehabilitation to get well. He worked very hard to prepare for his comeback. He eventually returned to major races like the Diamond League in London. His story is about more than just being fast. It is about how he handles both great success and difficult injuries.
